Transmissions of machine-to-machine communications, a central element of the Internet of Things (IoT), are newly expressly regulated by the ePR. The ePR recitals declare that promoting a trusted and secure Internet of Things in the digital single market is one of the aims of the ePR. As a result, all communications between devices need to be protected in order to remain confidential. The ePR also foresees that other sector-specific legislation may stipulate additional privacy safeguards.
